ARTIST STATEMENT
Max Freund (b. 1992) is a Vienna based artist, working across painting, drawing, print- and bookmaking. Interested by texture, form, language and semiotics, his work unifies classical canvas and found textiles and leftovers, opening a dialogue of picture-cognition. Cross-cultural sign and image systems are incorporated to modulate the multifaceted layers of information surrounding our brains and bodies. Like zooming in and out, he creates imaginative spaces, subordinating motives and depictions, turning links upside down, in favor of abstraction and fusion. Accompanied with doubtful titles, references to music and art history, fiction, humor, resignation and devotion, he allows the medium painting to undergo a multi-perspectival sight to correlate with the past and present.
